A Recap Of The 2016 Iowa Caucus

By Zackary Nichols

Courier Staff Reporter

All eyes were on Iowa as the 44th annual Iowa Caucus, the first public electoral event in the 2016 presidential election season, began.

Politically active Iowans, on both the left and right, filled elementary school gyms, churches, public libraries, grain elevator basements, and even gun shops in order to help their candidates of choice win some precious delegates.

The two candidates from the Democratic and Republican Parties with the most delegates will become the presidential nominees and will face each other in the general election in November.

On the democratic side, Senator Bernie Sanders faced off against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Governor Martin O’Malley. Going into the race Secretary Clinton was expected to come out on top in a dominant fashion, but her lead diminished as the Caucus got closer. She did eventually prevail, but it was a dead heat. The final tally shows Clinton on top at 49.9% of votes, compared to Sanders 49.6 and O’Malley at 0.6. Sanders was greatly aided by the high voter turnout.

By Raizel Ochoa

Courier Staff ReporterFullSizeRender (5)

The James Logan Health Center is holding a type 1 diabetes support group for students to get to know others, share support, experiences, and advice.

You may be wondering why specifically type 1. Here is the reason why: Although, all sorts of diabetics are very welcome, the group emphasizes this kind because the majority of diabetics in high school are type 1. Also, there is not much difference when regards to care and support between the 2 kinds. Therefore, the diabetes group is beneficial for all diabetics.

The leaders of the support group are Jeanne Chiu: nurse practitioner, Natalie Montes: Health Educator, Adrienne Lozano: Facilitate, and Travis Fuger: co-leader who is an experienced type one diabetic.

Travis is very thankful to now have a diabetes support group, for he never had the resources in his high school years. He is proud to finally be apart of a community of people who understand.

Weekly Reader: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

By Jovanna Brinck

Courier Columnist

pride“It is a truth universally acknowledge that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” In Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Seth Grahame-Smith took the beloved, classic story of Pride and Prejudice and intertwined the undead into it.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is an eighteenth-century comedy novel that displays a man, Mr. Darcy, with too much pride, and a woman, Elizabeth, who is prejudice towards people with good fortune, and their interactions together that eventually turns into a romance. This classic is on the reading list in many literature classes, and many people have read it, or at least know of its themes.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has a twist to the original story, though. Zombies walk among the characters, and many times the characters have to fight for their lives. Elizabeth and her sisters have been trained to kill and are some of the best zombie killers in town. When they are at a ball searching for men to marry, they are interrupted by an attack by zombies and have to put their skills to the test. Throughout the story, while at social gatherings, they are met by the nuisance zombies in the town.

By Natasha Lopez

Courier Staff Reporter

Conditioning for Badminton began last Wednesday, and will continue until this Thursday.

Interested players should meet at the field after school, and be prepared to practice for about an hour.

Returning players doing conditioning are happy to start the new season.

“It gives us time to get back into shape before the season starts,” returning player Carys Wu, told the Courier. “It’s a little tiring and can be a little repetitive but it’s not that bad,” she says. “My advice for new players, especially freshmen, is to try your best and just power through it until it’s over.”

By Amber McGee

Beginning last week a big rumor swept over the senior class, the rumor that there would be no senior quotes in this year’s yearbook.

It’s now been confirmed that there will in fact be no quotes in this year, and with that confirmation a few students have become frustrated enough to begin a petition.

Using the hashtag #ColtQuotes, senior Alexandra Newsom and a group of other students, who asked not to be named, are trying to convince Activities Director Glaze to bring back what they feel is an important part of senior year.

“I think it’s one of our senior rights, one of our traditions. When traditions go away you really feel it,” explained one of the students involved in the petition. “Our quotes sum up our four years in one sentence. It’s important.”

Cabaret, A Performance By Jazz Ensemble And Dancers

By Kayla Martinez

Entertainment Editor

hqdefault

James Logan’s Cabaret Night was Friday, January 22. Jazz singers and dancers came together to put on a marvelous performance.

New pop tunes allowed for our dancers to show off their moves to, and for our Jazz singers to hit those high notes and low notes like there was no tomorrow!

It was festive, fun, and full of color. Between each song, performers had to go backstage to change costume, but the organization here was very well thought out. Many of these quick-changes we’re cleverly hidden by the opposite group coming out and performing a piece to give the other group time.

By Jannet Rodriguez

Music Columnist

Zayn-Malik-Pillow-Talk-Video-Audio-250x253PILLOWTALK is Zayn Malik’s first single as a solo artist since he left the very popular boy band, One Direction. Zayn claimed that he left the band to be a “normal 22 year old”, of course many fans were devastated. In July of 2015, Zayn announced that he would be continuing his career as a solo artist. Zayn is releasing his music as ZAYN.

Fans went months without music, and were all very excited to see what Zayn would release.

PILLOWTALK is very different than the image One Direction had created for themselves. The fans did not get One Direction, they got Zayn, the Bradford Bad Boy.
