McNamara Discusses School Budget, Fundraising, and Prom

by Yoselin Ontiveros

This year one of the biggest controversies was that the junior and senior prom would be combined due to budget cuts. The news was revealed at the beginning of the school year which provoked a lot of anger among the senior class.  Even though things has settled down and prom is less than a month away, the question of why the proms got combined hasn’t been thoroughly explained.

Amy McNamara, the principal of James Logan High School, spoke to the senior class when the news was first revealed. She explained that the school did not have enough money to provide us with two separate proms. Confusion soon after arose in school on why we were able to receive all these chromebooks for students, but were not able to take care of Senior Ball.

According to McNamara the school has two different budgets, the money they get from the state and the one that students fundraise for school activities. “The school gets about $410,000 dollars from the state to be used for school supplies, like paper, and printers etc. That money can’t be used for school activities, the same goes for the money students raise. The money students fundraise is only for the students and must be used for the students,” said McNamara.

Weekly Reader: Terrier

by Amber McGeeTerrier.0

Weekly Reader Columnist

“I picked up Rebakah’s small, worn statue. I took it out often when I was a girl, because she was a woman, of all the ancestors who wore the black tunic and breeches of the Guard.”

After helping catch a gang of criminals when she was eight Rebakah Cooper knew that she wanted to become a Dog. In the city of Corus being a Dog, the nickname for Provost’s guards, is considered a high honor. Even so, it’s not uncommon for new recruits to request being sent to the higher city, where the crimes are few and the people are rich, but Beka surprises everyone by instead asking to go to the Lower City slums. Born and raised there for most of her life she feels that she understands the town better than all the others, and that by having a familiar face watching the streets the townspeople won’t be as volatile.

Her wishes don’t come true. Even though she’s been paired with the two best Dogs in the Lower City, Beka still can’t help but feel as though something about the place is off. For a while everything goes by easily. Then one day the grandson of Lower City’s most prominent loan shark is killed, and soon after a group of workers suddenly disappear. But in Lower City no one, not even the Dogs, notices or cares about a few missing souls. With only a few clues she’s heard from around the city it’s up to Beka to solve the mysteries before more innocents get hurt.

How Was Your Spring Break?

Sun01By Jessica Esquibel

Courier Staff Writer

Sadly, spring Break is over. This mean no more sleeping in, slacking on homework, or staying up late. Once that bell rang Monday, at 8:13, everyone had to come back to reality. I hope it lasted as long as it could, and I also hope your teachers weren’t too harsh on you, the very first day back. But don’t get lazy yet, we’re almost done with this school year. You can always check the countdown on the school website. For right now, just reminisce your break. It may have been busy, or really lay back. I went around and asked a couple of Logan students how there’s went. Maybe you can relate, or just wish you were them.

Nintendo Introduces New Content for Super Smash Bros.

unnamed (27)by Timothy Salcedo

Courier Tech Columnist

In the latest Nintendo Direct showcasing new downloadable content characters for Super Smash Bros, they showed two characters which were Mewtwo and Lucas, fan favorites throughout the Super Smash Bros. franchise. They were heavily requested by many fans, and supposedly the creator of Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai, told the fans,”Mewtwo will be made available to purchase as add-on content in the future, and is also available as part of the Super Smash Bros. Club Nintendo promotion, which offers consumers different ways to obtain this content. There are no other plans regarding paid add-on content at this stage.”

Just few weeks ago, Sakurai had announced in Nintendo Direct there was a new character about to be released in June. He was secretly developing Lucas, a character for the game while everyone waited for the Mewtwo DLC to release this month. It was actually the fact that he was really making two characters at once that surprised the fans. It’s understandable why he would misinform the public about his developments. considering that there have been many instances in which Nintendo information had been prematurely leaked.

unnamed (25)by Dun-Nielle Smith

Courier Staff Reporter

In the sport of football, there are many threatening injuries that can happen to its players. But the most critical injury would be a head collision. The main focus of this problem are the high school students. There have been more football injuries to them compared to that of professional players. Especially when it comes to head trauma. Head trauma to high school students have either caused them to sit out of one game, or an entire season, and sometimes even permanently. In some extreme cases it can result in death.

Three high school football players died of head collision injuries caused by the game on October of 2014, according to a story released by ESPN. The students’ names were: guard and linebacker Tom Cutinella, cornerback Demario Harris Jr, and linebacker Isaiah Langston.
