Just In Time for the Summer Split

The summer split begins very soon and a handful of teams ended up making roster changes. The two new teams are Enemy Esports (NME) & Team Dragon Knights (TDK). NME consists of fairly new players to the scene: Flarez, Trashy, Otter, Bodydrop & lastly a returning top lane veteran now a reformed mid laner Innox (formerly on Team Evil Geniuses). TDK have a few more familiar faces returning: Seraph, Kez, Ninja, Emperor, & Smoothie. Seraph used to be on Counter Logic Gaming as their starting top laner. While Kez was the starting jungler for compLexity Gaming. These two new teams look stronger than the usual former challenger teams. They shouldn’t be overlooked at all this upcoming split.

Now, time to get into the roster changes within the NA LCS. First off, Counter Logic Gaming was the first team I felt should’ve had a roster change due to their performance during the NA LCS Playoffs. They choked during Playoffs as predicted by many. CLG finally let go of their starting mid laner Austin “Link” Shin who had looked promising during the early stages of the spring split. They replaced him with not one, but two new mid laners. Those two mid laners are Eugene “Pobelter” Park & Choi “HuHi” Jae-Hyun.

James Logan Collects Canned Food for Charity

by Jessica Esquibel and Mary Asadulla

Courier Staff Reporters

Throughout the year canned food drives are held at James Logan High School. Particularly, near the holidays when food is needed most. It can be stressful for families who can’t afford as much as they need. That’s why this is a great cause James Logan holds. Anyone is welcome to bring in as many cans as they’d like. Unfortunately, not a lot of students take part in the donations.

We asked a couple of Logan students what their thoughts are on the matter, and if they do partake in donating cans when the time comes.

“Yea, whatever I can give, I do.” Andrew Hudspeth, 11th Grade.

“I would but I didn’t. I usually forget.” Ana, 12th Grade.

“Last time I did it was in third grade.” Larry Lernados, 10th Grade.

Even though it may seem that the majority of students didn’t participate this year, there is a decent number of cans.

Ms. Johnson Wins Her 600th Softball Game

png;base64e82a5fda7d33c8d9by Anne Bonifacio

Courier Staff Reporter

On Tuesday, May 19, Ms.Johnson had her 600th win as a softball coach. Teri Johnson has been a teacher at James Logan for 32 years, and she is currently finishing up her 30th season as James Logan’s softball coach.

Around her 400th win, Johnson knew she wanted to stay in Logan as the softball coach for a little longer. Johnson has been offered several different coaching jobs at colleges, such as Chabot College and Cal State East Bay. When explaining why she turned them down, she says, “I got mastered to teach and coach at a college level, but I realized I wouldn’t be able to change lives the way I can at a high school.”

Ms.Johnson doesn’t believe she will be able to achieve 700 wins. “I have at least 3 more years to teach. I know that once I walk away from teaching, I will be walking away from coaching as well,” Ms. Johnson informs The Courier. Ms. Johnson explains that a goal of 700 victories will be not reached because she only gets 24 games per season, and an additional 3 games in NCS.

On the Runway for President

By Sarah Bellal

(Note: This is a work of Satire)

With the 2016 United States presidential election right around the corner, the candidates are hot topics among both the young and old. Presidential fashion is an especially popular conversation starter.  Here’s how to dress like your favorite potential, past, and confirmed presidential candidates while remaining on-trend.

  1. Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hillary_Rodham_ClintonHillary is so famous for the pantsuit it’s not even funny. Seriously. I’m writing this with a straight face. Switch out the career pants for a fitted trouser and the shoulder pads for a boyfriend blazer for a modern take on Hillary’s signature style.

Senior Ditch Day… or Senior Epidemic?

By Supreme_Overlord

Courier Staff Reporter

James Logan High School is no stranger to mystery, scandal, and epidemic. On Tuesday, May 26th, a large portion of the senior class was absent from school. The cause of this sudden and unexpected event has yet to be confirmed, although many have speculated as to different reasons for the mass absence. Many absentees called in sick, leading some to believe that there was a widespread illness among the seniors. Several suspicious teachers believed those absent were participating in some ritualistic, social rite of passage that has been coined “Senior Ditch Day”. Innocent, unaffiliated bystander and Logan dropout Kumpleet Bee-Ess, for some unknown reason, commented, “Of course they weren’t ditching! Senior Ditch Day is a myth that the illuminati spread to give teachers a cover up for when they unleashed their artificially created virus onto the senior class.” As a Courier correspondent, I am choosing to wholeheartedly believe Bee-Ess and his speculations.

Here’s what some seniors did on Tuesday to get their minds off of the illness:

An anonymous student said, “I dmed my bestie to tell her I was sick, and SHE WAS SICK TOO, so we decided to go to Great America to cheer ourselves up. ASB was offering discounted tickets for some reason so that was just an added bonus on our road to recovery.”

“I went to Berkeley to do some hipster stuff and wound up in a smoke shop where the owner told me he had a cure for the senior epidemic, so I’ve been smoking it regularly since then.” – an student who simply identified as “Jer.”

“I quarantined myself and will not be leaving the confines of my house until the first semester of college starts and I’ve gotten the CDC to sanitize my surroundings.”- submission sent through email.

A Broken DS Turns Into An Operating Gameboy Micro

unnamed (32)by Timothy Salcedo

Courier Tech Columnist

On September 19, 2005 the Gameboy Micro was released, it was this tiny console the same size as the first generation iPod Touch. It allowed you to play Gameboy Advanced games, but sadly it couldn’t play any old games from the Gameboy Color back in the 90’s.

Anthony Thomas from Reddit has shared his experience of making a broken DS into a Gameboy Mirco.  He posted a tutorial video on Reddit and many people were impressed of the job he had done to his DS. Who knew a broken DS could be so useful again to the gaming community? He documents his building process in his personal website if you want more in-depth detail. His DS’s are being sold for $130 if he provides all the materials to make the product, or $110 if you provide him a DS.

Sex Trafficking in the Bay

by Angelica Castro

Courier Staff Reporter

Millions of men, women, and children are being forced into prostitution every single day. Sex Trafficking is one of the world’s most rapid growing criminal operations with the value of billions of dollars in California according to the Standing Against Global Exploitation. In 2009, The FBI released a report stating San Francisco has one of the largest incidences of child sex trafficking in the nation. 59% of Women, 17% of Girls, 14% of Men, and 10% of boys were affected by sex trafficking that year.

Victims that had been saved from their traffickers, aren’t safe from further consequences that were yet to unfold. Development of addictions to drugs and alcohol, brain injuries, sexually transmitted diseases, and miscarriages are all possibilities.

Some organizations like BAATC (Bay Area Anti- Trafficking Coalition), Freedom House, SFCAHT (San Francisco Collaborative Against Human Trafficking, and SAGE (Standing Against Global Exploitation), are on a mission to aid victims of sexual trafficking. Providing mental health counseling and help from SF District Attorney offices to fight their cases, are both examples of help they provide. (more…)

Weekly Reader: All Our Yesterdays

All Our Yesterdayby Amber McGee

Weekly Reader Columnist

Time travel is a staple of the science fiction genre, and yet one has to search hard to find stories that use it well. For time travel to work as a plot device it must fulfill one of two things, it must be explainable, or it must at least sound reasonable.

Where Midwinterblood had time traveling in the sense of reincarnation, All Our Yesterdays has characters experiencing the past the good old fashion way–being ripped apart to their particles by a giant machine in an underground laboratory. The trip is a painful one, but it must be made. Em and Finn have failed fourteen times now to stop the United States from falling in to chaos, and according to the note from her past selves, there’s only one last way for Em to prevent this dystopia from becoming reality.

Meanwhile, in another part of the country, four years in the past, Marina longs for the day she can tell her childhood friend James her true feelings. It’s been years now and every time she gets close something comes up. Finally she’s had enough, and with her resolve set she decides to tell James after a dinner party where his brother is speaking. The night goes perfect until one action sends not only the room, but the whole nation reeling. Can Marina find it in herself to remain strong, even when everything she knows and understands is being turned on its head?

Microsoft Introduces HoloLens

unnamed (31)by Timothy Salcedo

Courier Tech Columnist

On January 15th, 2015, Microsoft announced that they are working on Hololens, a new product compatible with the new Windows 10. Throughout the months Microsoft has been in development with this technology. Microsoft HoloLens is the first holographic computer running Windows 10.There would be no wires, phones, or connectivity to a PC at all. Microsoft HoloLens allows you to mark/pin in your physical environment to enhance a new vision into this reality.

“…we’ve made incredible advances as an industry in the ways we interact with computers. However, we are still constrained because we must conform to the ways computers recognize our commands through mouse clicks or by touching a screen. Using holograms, you can pin your digital content, such as apps, information, and even multi-dimensional videos, in the physical space around you, so you can interact with it in the same ways that you interact with other physical objects. Microsoft HoloLens generates a multi-dimensional image visible to the user so that he or she perceives holographic objects in the physical world. Holographic objects seen with Microsoft HoloLens can be pinned, or anchored, to physical locations you choose, move according to their own rules, or remain in a specific location within your field of view regardless of where you are or in which direction you are looking.” says a Microsoft representative.

This device that Microsoft is making seems pretty impressive and it’s insane how we are in the middle of all this technological innovation.

James Logan Promposals

promposals

by Anne Bonifacio

Courier Staff Reporter

As the junior and senior prom approaches, people have been surprising their dates with prom proposals, or promposals. There have been numerous promposals that have already taken place at James Logan.

People usually make a poster, and gather friends to surprise the person they are asking. There are usually cute pick up lines or catch phrases on the posters. Promposals usually happen during lunch or after school, so that they can have a big audience.

“I think that promposals are really cute. They’re especially necessary if you really need a date to prom,” Celyn Alaras stated, “but I feel like some promposals do too much. Like, some people blow their promposals way out of proportion.”

“I feel the same way, I think asking your date in a proper way is necessary,” John Perez added, “it just kind of depends on the person, though. If they like romantic stuff like that, then yeah it’s necessary. If they’re okay with being asked on the down low, then that’s fine too.”
