Christina Perri Shines in San Francisco

By Yoselin Ontiveros

Courier Staff Writer

IMG_6041Christina Perri performed at The Masonic in San Francisco last week and it was a very small and pleasant performance. Perri is on tour with Demi Lovato and she had not had a chance to sing all of her favorite song in a while, so she had a short two hour long concert just to herself. She sang a lot of her old songs and you can tell she was really enjoying herself and letting loose taking in the energy of the audience.

Perri sings really good live, so good you if you closed your eyes you would not know it was live. As she sang you can tell she had missed singing all her songs because she was really into it and excited the whole time. The audiences did not go wild they just sang along and enjoyed the moment. At one point Perri involved her audience into a song and it made it so special and awesome at the same time. She took it all in enjoying every moment of it, singing duets with one of her band members and having amazing light effect. Christina Perris concert was something special not only for her fans but for herself and her crew.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

photo
By Amber McGee
Courier Staff Writer
To answer your first question, no this book is not about the Greek philosopher going on a road trip with the Italian poet to discover more about the universe. They don’t go to space either, sorry to disappoint you if you’re into that kind of thing.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe has no underlying plot. If action and fantasy are the only things you’ll read then this is not the book for you–but you should still read it anyway. This book can easily be finished in a day but it will leave you feeling satisfied for a long time afterwards.
The book is written from Aristotle “Ari”’s point of view, and from the very first page you learn about what kind of personality he has. On the more stoic and stubborn side, all of Aristotle’s thoughts and sentences are short and to the point. This type of writing style can be a little jarring to read at first as it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of flow and prose, but as the story progresses Ari becomes more open and honest with himself. It’s a slow process, but when you learn more about his family and relationships with others it becomes understandable why he’s that way in the first place.

The Giver, Appreciation for Human Nature

giver image

By Kyla Laquian

Courier Staff Writer

The dystopia Lois Lowry had created in his novel The Giver, is an intriguing yet peculiar one. It explores the essence of human nature through this dystopian society he conjured, that acts as a suppressant towards everything that makes us human, and raises thought provoking questions about human nature itself. It is post-acocalyptic, when the human race decides that in order to avoid their own destruction, everybody must convert to sameness.

People in the community do not have the simple, human pleasures of perceiving color, listening to music, or even feel emotions such as happiness, sadness, love or anger. Each of the “dwellings” that the people live in are identical to one another, and the term “home” is rejected because it implies feelings of love and warmth which is what they are attempting to shun. The family members are assigned to one another, and do not love one another, but “appreciate” one another. The brilliant young protagonist Jonas, who is always at the top of his class and displays special abilities such as the ability to “see beyond” or in other words, notice hints of color, is eventually assigned the most important role in the community, which is the Receiver of Memories. An unexpected twist occurs when Jonas decides to return all of the memories of humanity’s past back to the people, due to his revelation that to be human includes both flaws and perfections, and is something that is unique to our race which we should never reject.

Breaking the Laws of Drugstore Cosmetics

By Yoselin Ontiveros

Cover Girl is a very well known drugstore brand that has kept many makeup lovers satisfied for years. One of their most outstanding products is their Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 foundation. The foundations technology gives great long wearing coverage. Being a drugstore foundation it ranges from $9-12.99 yet it has high end qualities, being as good as some very expensive foundations. Personally I’m in love with this foundation, whether Im feeling in the mood for a light or full coverage. Hides acne really well, giving a flawless look throughout the entire day. Another amazing quality of the foundation is that it’s very blendable providing the capacity of building the makeup without caking your face. It’s has SPF 20, so it gives you a great look and protects your skin all at once.

Beside all the great technology, there are always downsides to everything. It all depends on your skin and how it take in the product. Having a semi-oily skin and acne-prone, this product has been great for me. My faces does not get oily at all as long as I powdered a tiny bit and it does not break me out. If you have really oily skin it might not keep you shine free all day, but it might work if you use a matifying primer and setting powder. If your skin is very sensitive it can break you out and if you have dry skin just moisturize  well before using. This product has pleased a lot of people but it has let some down. You will never known if it works for you unless you give it a try. I definitely recommend this foundation to everyone just to give it a try, it might become your new favorite foundation.

The Upscale of Cyberbullying

439646129_f979360894_o (1)

By Kyla Laquian

Courier Staff Writer

With a couple of clicks and a rapid flick of the wrist, the damage was done. Another hurtful comment had been posted. Statistically, more than 1 out of 3 teens have experienced cyberthreats online (Cyberbullying Statistics), and over 42% with tech access have reported being cyberbullied (Cyberbullying Rampant on the Internet). From cyberbullying, teens face a number of psychologically damaging self esteem issues, which have lead to many teen suicides, which is the third leading cause of death in the US. There is a possible correlation between the current upshoot of cyberbullying, and the sudden escalation of social media startups post recession. Cyberbullying has increased from 5% in 2003, to an upshoot of 31.7% in 2007,and to 54% of facebook users in 2014.  At the same time, technology from laptops to smartphones are becoming more refined and advanced, allowing for more instantaneous virtual communication which gives bullies a quicker outlet to post hurtful comments.

Image result for annabelle movie times

By Elijah Permito

Courier Staff Writer

As all of you Conjuring fans may already know, Annabelle is now out in theatres. This terrifying movie is written by Gary Dauberman, directed by John R. Leonetti, and produced by James Wan. This supposedly is based on a true story and is about the life Annabelle before being possesed.

In this movie, John Gordan is having a baby with his wife Mia. He decides to buy an early gift, a rare and beautiful vintage doll, dressed in a wedding gown. Their delightful time with this unique doll, also known as Annabelle is short lived. One night a satanic cult invades their home and violently attacks the innocent couple. The members of the satanic group not only leave the home with spilled blood and terror, but they  leave something a little more. Apparently the cultists conjured an evil entity within the doll, and thus the history of Annabelle begins.

This movie is rated R and is about one hour and thirty-nine minutes long. If you are a big fan of horror movies I suggest that you watch this movie for its amazing sinister plot that will have you terrified and paranoid.
