Album Review: Blue Neighbourhood

By Jannet Rodriguez

Courier Columnist

Troye_Sivan_-_Blue_NeighbourhoodTroye Sivan is a twenty year old Youtuber and singer from Perth, Australia. Earlier this year he released an EP titled WILD, and now the time has come to finally hear his album called Blue Neighbourhood. Blue Neighbourhood is a continuation of WILD, so the songs from the EP are on the album. You can read the review of WILD here, http://www.jameslogancourier.us/?p=1511.

Blue Neighbourhood is one of the best albums I have listened to, the production is amazing and it’s different than anything I have heard. What really drew me into Troye’s music was that it had variety. My all time favorite song on the album is TALK ME DOWN, because it really is about that point in a relationship where you do not know what you are. The melody also is beautiful, and the lyrics go very well with it. TALK ME DOWN is the third music video to the Blue Neighbourhood music video series, and those videos are so powerful. The main characters are two boys who are in this friendship, relationship and it shows things they had to deal with as two boys in love. Really great.

QOW: What Are Your Holiday Plans?

By Yulissa Avalos

Courier Staff Reporter

QOTW

As winter break is literally right around the corner, we went around and asked students what their plans for the holidays are.

Some answers were fun while others were plain simple.

Angel Pech, a senior, said he planned to do “nothing… probably just go to my dad’s house.”

“Spend time with bae, work, go out with my family because we never spent time together. Go ice skating, probably go visit relatives that live nearby, and sadly study for finals”, said Esmeralda Ramirez, also a senior at Logan.

Alvarado Middle School To Change Name To Honor Of Filipino Labor Leaders

By Emma Kalonda & Elizabeth Ruiz

Courier Staff Reporters

Alvarado Middle School will officially be changing its name to Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School this Friday.

House 3 counselor, Joe Angeles, was involved with the movement to change the name, and recently sat down with us to talk about it.

According to Angeles this name change has been in discussion since 1992. Although it’s been around for years, it was only really considered an option in January 2013, and was later adopted in April 2013. The name wasn’t always going to Alvarado–it was in discussion for several different schools, Decoto High School, for example.

Being a member of the New Haven Filipino Society of Education, Angeles played an important role in the name change. We asked him about how this all started and he told us some information that a lot of people may not have known about.

By Jovanna Brinck

Courier Columnist

Close up side view of romantic young couple in bed at homeSince the holidays are approaching, I decided to review a Christmas book to get into the holiday spirit.

One Week in Christmas features four short stories about relationships during Christmastime written by four different authors.

“Marrying Owen” by Alexis Anne is about a young college professor, named Alice, who brings her rock-singing boyfriend to meet her parents. This relationship between the two has only been going on for six months, and they have been separated most of the time because Owen has been on the road with his band. Alice’s parents are extremely conservative, and expects Alice to find a guy that is more like her, successful with a serious job. Despite her parents suggestions, Alice believes she truly loves Owen and that they are going to spend the rest of their lives together.

By Raizel Ochoa

Courier Staff Reporterdownload (3)

Freelee The Banana Girl, as she likes to call herself, has the most famous vegan channel on Youtube. She spreads awareness of animal cruelty, planet destroyment, and human health. Most of her viewers have strong negative or positive beliefs about how she is changing other people’s lives.

One reason why some may loathe The Banana Girl is because she continuously shows off her body with tight crops top and skin hugging pants. She says she enjoys to expose it to the world because she is proud that she has found a lifestyle that allows her to eat as much as she wants daily while feeling fresh and energized after every meal without gaining excess fat in the future.

Now let’s get to her “diet”. Freelee eats incredibly large amounts of fruit until the time of 4 o’clock in the afternoon. After that, she eats huge vegan meals. The name of her food style is “raw till 4”. Ones who follow this way of eating is able to consume unlimited amounts of calories and carbohydrates while lesseningtheir fat intake. Benefits of this lifestyle include loads of energy, unlimited amounts of food, and if you care about aesthetics, a lean body. Along with going against the beating of farm animals, water saving, and planet life conservation.

M.E.C.H.A Club Hosting Charity Drives

By Zackary Nichols

Courier Staff Reporter

M.E.C.h.A club will be hosting this year’s annual canned food and toy drive.

All students and teachers will have the opportunity to “adopt” a family. Once you “adopt” a family, all of your canned food, money, and toy donations will be going directly towards the family in need.

“We ‘adopt’ around fifteen families a year and provide for them“ commented M.E.C.h.A club secretary and Courier editor-in-chief Jessica Esquibel, “and all of the donations will all go towards needy families,”

“Anyone can ‘adopt’ a family,”  said M.E.C.h.A club President Alexandra Tenorio, “we do this every year and the outcome is always pretty good since all of the classes get involved with it too.”

According to Esquibel and Tenorio, the drive has been in progress since before Thanksgiving, “but word hasn’t gotten out about it until just recently.”

Students Prepare for El Nino

By Danielle Israde

aaaaa(3)Courier Staff Reporter

2015 in California has welcomed an El Nino winter. There has been a lot of rain, wind and overall a cold atmosphere. Unlike years prior, students now need to be prepared day to day with any necessities needed to take on the cold weather.

´´I like the rain because we are in drought, the rain is good. ¨ stated Mursal a senior. When dealing with the cold weather at home she says ¨I turn up the heater up to 80 and I wrap myself in a blanket-burrito¨ and in the mornings, she gets ready for school by ¨ I drink tea, and I turn up the heater in my car. She likes to wear scarves and beanies.

Abdul a senior prefers the cold weather because his clothing style best fits the winter however he explains ¨I don’t like the rain unless I am at home because I don’t like being wet.¨ He takes hot showers to stay warm before he starts his day.

Album Review: LANY’s Make Out

By Jannet Rodriguez

Courier Columnist

makeoutLANY are an alternative pop band that began making music in a Nashville bedroom. The three members of the band are Paul Klein, Les Priest and Jake Gross. They have released an EP titled, MAKE OUT and it consists of six songs that have already been released, they are just remastered, and better. One of the songs titled “Kiss”, is new and it is the first time anyone has heard it. The six songs are ILYSB, Walk Away, Bad, Bad, Bad, Made in Hollywood, BRB; kiss, and ILYSB (STRIPPED).

I think MAKE OUT was a very good title for the EP because these are songs you want to kiss someone to. From the original more upbeat version of ILYSB to the sad slow song, BRB; kiss. My favorite song on the EP is the stripped version of ILYSB because it is just Paul singing so calmly. Plus, the meaning of the song is just about being in love and wanting to be with someone. The song is talking to a person telling them how much they mean.
